Irma Disaster Relief Support Ends

The 2017 hurricane season ended on November 30 where sadly, thousands were devasted by hurricanes Maria, Irma and Harvey. MAP is no longer fundraising for Hurricane Irma relief efforts due to the overwhelming response. Aid is now needed to continue to help those impacted primarily by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, Dominica and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Hurricane Maria Update:

With more than 75 days since Hurricane Maria destroyed much of the island, the people of Puerto Rico are desperate to rebuild their communities. Electricity is in short supply and some areas are still in need of clean water access. Sadly, the restoration process has been slowed, significantly. MAP’s Disaster Response Team conducted site visits in Puerto
Rico November 6-9. Based on this evaluation, MAP plans to send 160 pallets of relief supplies to assist in the recovery process. Specific plans are being finalized with partners in Puerto Rico, US, Virgin Islands, and Dominica to help people in need.

For victims of Hurricane Maria, MAP International has supplied critically-needed antibiotics, bronchodilators, hypertension
medicines, analgesic medicine, and hygiene items such as antiseptic wipes, soap for hand-washing and other basic disease prevention measures.

Distribution of Disaster Health Kits for FL & GA

MAP International is no longer providing Disaster Health Kits to survivors of hurricane Irma in Florida and Georgia. While the damage in both states has been great, residents are able to return to their homes and/or have found alternate housing. There are no longer shelters or distribution points for MAP's Disaster Health Kits.

MAP recently shared this blog post describing the aftermath of Irma and how it affected staff of MAP International living in Georgia:

"It could have been so much worse,” is a phrase I’ve now heard from people standing in the midst of rubble to those surveying the flood-damaged ruins in front yards. It’s a statement of gratitude but also a realization that even when the worst didn’t happen, it will take weeks, months or years to rebuild many lives.

That’s why I’m grateful that we’re receiving daily feedback from our partners on the ground telling us how MAP supplies are helping ease the suffering of so many. MAP is giving hope, something that is becoming rarer as the days of suffering continue.

MAP International staff, many of whom had to evacuate their homes and are still without electricity, are responding to their neighbors in Savannah, taking DHKs to a shelter yesterday. They are also responding to other shelters in surrounding areas, trying to alleviate the suffering of so many, even while they deal with their own challenges.

Yes, it could have been worse. But the suffering of so many is very real. I’m so grateful to work with people who feel the needs of others so deeply and are willing to do whatever it takes to respond. And I’m especially grateful for our donors who enable us to respond now when the needs are so great.
