Challenge

There are currently more than 15,000 people residing in over 150 shelters throughout Florida who were displaced as a result of Hurricane Irma. Flooding and disasters put children, the elderly and disabled at increased risk for health issues. Many already have compromised immune systems making them more susceptible to illness. Individuals exposed to flood waters are at risk for skin rashes, conjunctivitis, and ear and throat illnesses. Disaster Health Kits help prevent the spread of illness.

Solution

MAP International is sending Disaster Health Kits to serve the people living in shelters in Florida. These kits include antiseptic wipes, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, a washcloth and other essential items that help prevent the spread of illness. Each kit is designed to help meet the needs of one person residing in a shelter for one week.

Long-Term Impact

By preventing the spread of illness to those affected by Hurricane Irma, communities will be able to recover from the effects of the storm sooner.
