Dear Donors,

Although we did not raise enough money through Global Giving for the initial project we foresaw, we have basically delivered what we wanted to do through a combination of your generous funding and a partnership with AAR Japan.In addition we had volunteer labour used in many parts of the competition, which enabled us to make the project happen.

So thank you for allowing us to deliver a fantastic training programme, folllowed by a highly successful wheelchair basketball competition!

In summary the project activities included;

  • In addition to the weekly training that was provided earlier in the project, we provided a targeted 4 days clinic on 4-6 March between 5:30-19:00. A total of 22 people came to each practice session prior to the comp.
  • The training and competition took place at the Indoor stadium of Center Medical for Rehabilitation in Vientiane
  • The teams involved were the Lao Disabled People’s Association (LDPA), Center Medical for Rehabilitation (CMR),  Vocational School for the Disabled (Sikeud) and ADDP project.
  • The Sikeud team could not afford to stay in Vientiane for 4 days for the training, so instead new players were invited to particpate in the training sessions in Vientiane, and Sikeud trained at their centre.
  • AAR of Japan supported the project and provided a coach from Japan to help in the training, Mr. Nakata

On the day of the competition we had a great group of spectators;

  • Mr. Bounpone Xayasen - the head of the government department that oversees services for People with Disability
  • Dr. Kaisone Vice President of the Lao Paralympics Committee
  • Mr. Thongchan Doungmalalay Vice President of LDPA
  • Mr. Nouaneta Latsavongxay Vice President of LDPA,
  • 12 staff from the LDPA
  • Teacher and students from Secondary school from Chanthabuli district - 52 people.
  • Teacher and student from Vocational School for Disabled, Sikued - 26 people

The outcome of the comp was as below:

Round : 1 Sikeud vs LDPA. Score: LDPA 32, Sikued 18 - LDPA won

Round : 1 ADDP vs CMR. Score: ADDP 39, CMR 16 - ADDP won

Round : 2 Sikeud vs CMR. Score: Sikeud 26, CMR 19 - Sikeud won

Round : 2 ADDP vs LDPA. Score: LDPA 37, ADDP 36 - LDPA won

The LDPA have a number of aims for the future. These are;

  • We would like to continue practice and make wheelchair basketball competition a normal part of the annual calendar of events for the LDPA.
  • We would like to encourage women to play wheelchair basketball, with the initial plan to have 2 womens teams.
  • We would like to organise a wheelchair basketball tournament in Oudomexay province after the end of the National Games in late 2014.

There is a small amount of money left in the project funds, and we will be figuring out how best to use that in order to work towards the goals listed above.

Thank you once again for your generosity.

 Attached is the entire report put together by Ving tong Chantavong, our ace LDPA sports co-ordinator (voluntary).
