Dear friends, receive a warm greeting from Cochabamba.

In these months we’ve been working hard with different groups of people and would like to share with you some insights on activities with parents and caregivers.

Since last year, we’ve been organizing small groups of mothers and fathers of children with disabilities, in order to give them opportunities to meet and share their thoughts, experiences and learnings. A nice way to get everybody engaged is to craft things, like small toys that can be used in home with their children. The place is also very important: it should be a welcoming place, not too big, so that people feel comfortable to express themselves.

We also like to act in association with other partners: for example, on July 9th, we have been invited by a local network of institutions that work with children with disabilities and their families, to perform a training on disability rights. The event has been held in a local university campus, gathering about 40 mothers, fathers and caregivers of children with disabilities, from different areas of Cochabamba city. After a brief presentation, we watched a video and reflected about human rights. Then we focused on people with disabilities’ situation in our context: are human rights fulfilled? What can we do about it? We did workgroups to discuss on topics like health rights, education, work, accessibility… Groups wrote down their conclusion on a flipchart and share in plenary session. The whole activity sounded well attended.

Your contribution in this crowdfunding allows us to reach more people and keep spreading the good seeds of human rights and inclusion! Donate now at https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/disability-rehab-bolivia/.

Dear friends and donors, hope you are thriving.

We’re glad to share with you some experiences we’ve been doing in this first half of 2023 in Tukuy Pacha early childhood program. In the southern district of Cochabamba city, we reached new children with home visits and group workshops for enhancing their parents’ and caregivers’ skills.

Our technical staff and community promoter worked hard to develop new materials to be used in home stimulation sessions: for example, an amazing set of hand made characters, for helping children and families to recognize and manage their emotions. Families are part of home-made material crafting and do their best to set up stimulation corners in their houses.

The support of generous people like you has been a key factor to enhance program quality and sustainability. Consider the opportunity to support Tukuy Pacha constantly becoming a monthly donor!

We also spent time in performing a short need assessment in educational settings, that confirmed difficulties in participation of children with disabilities and development delays in kindergartens and primary schools. In response to this crucial issue, Tukuy Pacha started a pilot project for promoting inclusive education in two local schools. We embrace this challenge with commitment and hope to sow seeds of change.

Results is up to you! Donate now at https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/disability-rehab-bolivia/.

Jadiel using his new wheelchair

Dear friend and donor, we hope that you are feeling very well at the beginning of this new year, together with your loved ones and enjoying carrying out actions that improve and add value to your community. To let you know some of the fruits of your generosity, we are pleased to share the small and big stories of two children with whom Tukuy Pacha has worked in recent months.

Jadiel is 3 years old and lives in Vinto, Cochabamba; When we first met him, he was in a state of malnutrition and spent most of his time lying in a crib. The only stimuli that caught his attention were the images and sounds on television. Jadiel has spastic cerebral palsy, which makes it difficult for him to move his arms and legs.

Through networking, Jadiel has obtained the support and follow-up he needs: he and his parents, the staff and volunteers of the Tukuy Pacha Association, the public servants of the municipal disability unit and the hospital have participated in this work. Through your generous contributions, you too have been a part of it! The activities carried out during the home visits have helped Jadiel control his head more; The provided neurological wheelchair allows him to spend more time sitting, in a better position, being able to participate in some key moments of family life, such as meals and also going out into the yard or outside the house. In the public hospital, Jadiel has been able to access physiotherapy sessions and receive nutritional controls.

Axel is 4 years old and lives with his parents and older brothers in the south of Cochabamba. When we met him, his mother told us that she did not have specific information and knowledge on how to support his son: Axel has cerebral palsy and has little control over his body, which causes him difficulty moving and limb retractions lower. Through weekly home visits, the Tukuy Pacha community promoter has carried out, together with Alex and his mother, games and stimulation activities, with the aim of improving his head control and the use of his hands, to manipulate toy and learn to eat alone. In this process, thanks to your help, Axel has received a standing frame, built by a professional technician; This device allows Axel to carry out activities in a standing position for a certain time each day, strengthening his legs and feet, improving his trunk and head control and also his digestion. As a result of the home rehabilitation process carried out in recent months, Axel has improved in various aspects: he can now sit alone, manipulates objects with one hand and sometimes with two, and communicates through gestures and sounds.

As you can see, your help is decisive in helping to improve the lives of many people like Jadiel and Axel. Let's continue adding results together!

Erlinda in a home session of physiotherapy

Dear friend and donor, through your valuable contribution, people with disabilities and our team’s hard work, we promote big changes in people’s lives. Like Erlinda, a young lady from Punata, a rural town in the Cochabamba valley, Bolivia. When we met her, some months ago, she had difficulty moving and practically did not leave her house. With in-house physiotherapy sessions, constant training by a community promoter and technical aids like a wheelchair and a walker, now she manages to stand for a few seconds and is improving her skills in wheelchair handling. First step has been taken and many others come: new possibilities are open to her.

With your help, in the last four months Tukuy Pacha has been able to provide people like Erlinda support and various technical aids (1 neurological wheelchair, 4 child knee immobilizers, 2 orthopedic cushions): together we can achieve more! Keep supporting our work with people with disabilities, donating at https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/disability-rehab-bolivia/

According to the Community Rehabilitation Strategy that we implement, we also developed and realized specific trainings, in order to strengthen the capabilities of disability organizations and public service workers. For example, together with the disability people and family organization of San Benito, we did a training on alternative communications: it has been an excellent opportunity to show practical ways to enhance communication and promote inclusion of persons with disabilities, beginning from their family environment. More stories and information about our work are available on our Facebook page, Tukuy Pacha Discapacidad Bolivia
