For a child, there is no better time to create a strong foundation for lifelong learning than the first five years of life. Family’s tender care and a stimulation-rich environment play a difference, even more when physical, sensory, intellectual or neurodevelopmental conditions are present. This core belief is one of that guides the community work of Tukuy Pacha and roots our rehab and inclusion projects.
In partnership with local authorities and allies like Save the Children in Bolivia, over the last five years our organization has been fostering inclusion in public kindergartens of Cochabamba’s peripherals neighboorhods. The main goal was clear from the beginning: that children with any disabilities or development delays could fully participate with their peers, in their communities’ care services.
Our team works directly where it matters most: capacity building workshops with daycare staff, personalized home training sessions with children and their parents. We put a particular effort in developing and providing adaptive materials to children, families and facilities; for example, the “Mobile phrase book”: designed with three rotating sections, this simple, fun educational tool allows children with speech and communication delays to build complete sentences independently. This year, we have also been actively supporting and participating in the drafting of a proposed municipal law regarding people with autism.
As always, your generosity allows us to address emergent needs and requests that are not usually covered by regular programs or official projects: fixing a facility water supply, or providing food prizes in families gatherings are examples of that. Bolivia is facing a crisis that touches economy, energy and environment, among others. Due to severe cuts in local government budgets, the sustainability and quality of public services for children, elders and people with disabilities is menaced.
