Those with disabilities in Sri Lanka continue to face poverty and hardship due to stigma, lack of community support and infrastructure. Prithipura Communities provides a home, rehabilitation, education and work opportunities to 240 children and adults with disabilities with little or no family support, across 4 locations in Sri Lanka. This project will contribute towards the salaries of 50 experienced carers and teachers.
Stigma and discrimination continue to play a key role in lack of opportunity for people with disabilities. People with disabilities often face difficulties accessing education and work as a result. For example, a 2003 survey found that 39 per cent of people with a disability in Sri Lanka had never attended school. Furthermore, family abandonment is common, especially in families living in chaotic situations due to poverty.
Prithipura Communities offers a personalised path to independence and opportunity. Rehabilitation, education and work opportunities are key elements of our activities. Through providing these services, we can ensure that people with disabilities are able to reach their potential and make informed choices about their future as well as receiving appropriate life-long support where required. Our dedicated team of carers and teachers is essential to our success!
Prithipura Communities believes in the intrinsic value of all humans regardless of disability and that people with disabilities should have equal access to a family life, education, work opportunities and community integration. Through the services we provide and our outreach activities in the community we have created long-term opportunity for over 50 years and are confident that we can continue to do this with your support.
