Summary

High maternal and child mortality rates in Kenya result from limited access to quality and opportune healthcare during pregnancy and childbirth. This issue is intensified by the lack of free maternal healthcare, particularly in a context where 70% of Kenya's urban population resides in slums, surviving on around 1 USD per day. This project aims to provide maternal and neonatal healthcare in informal settlements in Nairobi, ensuring that pregnancy and childbirth are safer and more dignified.

Challenge

Kenya has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, with 530 deaths per 100,000 live births. This challenge is particularly serious in Kibera, Africa's largest and one of its poorest slums. Living on extremely low incomes, these women face a paid healthcare system that is unaffordable for them. This leads to poor prenatal care, unsafe deliveries, and inadequate postpartum follow-up, increasing the risk of pregnancy and postpartum complications for mothers and their newborns.

Solution

Through our housing program, we provide women in Kibera with a safe place to spend their pregnancy and the first months of their newborn's life. This includes the coverage of all medical expenses associated with pregnancy, childbirth and the first months of the child's life. Within these expenses you can find ultrasounds, medicine, exams, childbirth, cesarean section, emergency expenses, among others. The Project seeks to ensure the dignity, health and rights of the women and their children.

Long-Term Impact

A safe and healthy pregnancy, childbirth and first months of life contribute to reducing the maternal and neonatal mortality rate. Our program seeks to impact the lives of 20 women and their children annually, contributing to the general health in Kibera, which will ultimately impact better social, health, educational and economic development in the long term for these families and their community.
