We would like to share with you, a story of one of our students. To protect his identity, we will use the name Satish in place of his real name.
Satish is a bright and intelligent 13 year old boy. Coming from a family where father is the sole bread earner, it was difficult for Satish family to provide quality education to both of their children. His father is a tailor and earns a meagre amount of INR 6,000 (USD 100) monthly. His mother is a homemaker. Income of his father is barely sufficient to meet the basic needs of family consisting of four members. With much financial constraints, his parents strives to provide basic education to their children.
He was studying in 3rd grade at Geetanjali Public School, located in Jagatpura area of Jaipur, Rajasthan; but due to some reason, the school got closed. His father was looking for another school with reasonable monthly fees, when he came to know about the activity based teaching at Academy for Working Children (AWC), being run by Humana People to People India. After discussing with the project staff, Harsh was enrolled in 4th grade. Seeing his progress and ability to grasp the concepts, he was promoted to 6th grade after few months of his enrolment. When Satish joined the Academy, he hardly used to take part in activities and was unconfident. He rarely interacted with other students and seldom participated in extra-curricular activities. But over the years, he has become participative, confident and takes initiative in class.
At the academy, he enjoys morning assembly, and theme weeks wherein he prepares charts, diagrams and gets to know about community work. Furthermore, he has learned to use computer and understands basics of the computer. Along with studies, he has developed understanding about practical as well as general knowledge. About the staff of Academy, he says, “The teachers at the Academy are very supportive, courteous, listen to the problems of students and never discriminates among students”.
At present, he is in 8th grade and will be completing his journey at the Academy. He wishes that the academy had classes up to 10th grade, so he could continue his studies in AWC. With the support of teachers, he has realised his dreams and has decided to achieve his aim of becoming an engineer. He also wants to work hard to support his younger brother to achieve his dreams.
