Before Covid we had a few second-hand computers in our boarding houses. Some of them didn't work very well and there were not really enough to go round. The pandemic changed education overnight by relying on distance- learning, and EFA realised we had to improve the girls'  access to IT so they could keep learning no matter what.

For girls from the remote High Atlas region, it's very rare to have a computer at home. If there are some smart phones, then the issue is affordability of internet connection. This prompted us to start this campaign to get more smart devices, such as phones and tablets for the girls who had exams coming up. We bought sim cards packed full of internet, so they could stay connected to their teachers and fellow students during the lock down. As a result, we had a 72% pass rate for the final year exams. The girls said they would not even have had the confidence to do the exams if it wasn't for the devices.

The last 6 months of the project we have focussed less on home-devices and more on upgrading our computers in the houses. Thanks to this project and some additional funding, we have now equipped all the houses with good computers, up-to-date software licences and additional internet routers. The girls use computers so much more since the first lock-down and we are happy about this, as digital skills are essential for University studies and future employment.

Even though the lockdown didn’t happen this school year, lesson time was reduced by 50% due to physical distancing guidelines. The girls at EFA, however, were able to keep up to date due to the computers and devices. They did their research online, used devises when back in their villages and made the most of  online e-learning programmes to supplement lost lessons. We also managed to shift our International Volunteer programme online so the girls could get the necessary help with English and French!

As a result, the girls achieved an incredible 92% pass for the final year exams last month!

These devices have been a life-line, during what has been described as 'the biggest disruption to education ever.' [Malala Fund]. The silver lining is that the EFA girls now have much better access to computers and better skills, despite the digital divide they face in their own families and villages.

A huge thank you for your support and vision which makes these girls' future better and stronger!

We launched this campaign in response to the covid lockdown in Morocco last year. It was the first time we had had to close the EFA houses. This meant the girls all had to return to their villages for 3 months leaving them stranded as they had little or no means to access online lessons over those 3 months. Many had exams coming up, and yet they had no means of revising for their studies.

" I actually started to feel afraid that the school might never open again. For me I didn’t even have access to see classes on television and I didn’t have phone access in my village, so I felt completely isolated."  Oumaima, 17 years

This campaign meant that we could purchase tablets for the final year students who had impending exams. They said they would not have been able to sit the exams without them! Thankfully the houses opened again last September, however lessons have been reduced to meet distancing guidelines. Continuing with this campaign has meant we have been able to purchase more computers so that the girls can engage in many helpful online activities, including our volunteer programme which shifted online and many interesting webinars.

"When I finally heard that school would start again, I was very excited. Being back at EFA really helps me study. I get support from my friends and housemothers and I can use a computer." Khadija, 16 years

The pandemic revealed that there is a stark digital divide in Morocco, especially for rural girls. Your support has meant we can bridge that gap in a variety of ways, equipping them with vital skills and digital confidence to get them through this unusual time and prepare them for University and better employment opportunities in the future.

We are excited to share an update about our Digital Tools for Girls in Rural Morocco project!

We launched this project in September 2020 - our first project on GlobalGiving - to meet the challenges of the pandemic to our girls’ education programme in Morocco. The 3 month lockdown in Morocco meant all 250 girls at our boarding houses were forced back to their villages where revision and schooling was impossible due to not having access to digital tools to continue their schooling online.

This is where you came to the rescue!

Our campaign was a great success, with $5000 raised in just a week. We extended the target to increase the number of digital tools we could purchase and deal with the uncertainties of the new school year. In the end we raised $19,456 which we could immediately invest in new computers, tablets and internet data.

Morocco hasn’t gone back into lockdown this school year (so far), however we have had to reduce the number of girls in our boarding houses at one time, to meet safe-distancing guidelines. This means we rotate the girls with one week at the boarding houses and the other week in their villages.

"The 3 months I spent back at home during covid I realised it is not easy to find space and time to study back in my village and also no way to connect to my studies online." Fatima, 16 years

Having devices means, when back in their villages, the girls can keep up with their lessons. The additional laptops also mean the girls can access the growing online resources, receive support from online volunteers (we had to pause our face-to-face programme) and expand their digital proficiency.

According to UNICEF, the pandemic has been the largest obstacle to education in history, with rural girls suffering more than any other social group. Your support meant that the EFA girls did not feel forgotten or isolated and could maintain a degree of continuity and hope during the time of uncertainty.

" I couldn't believe other people were thinking of us and helping us. I didn't feel hopeless.Thank you"- Karima, EFA student

This campaign and others are still running on GlobalGiving, so please feel free to share the link with your friends and family so we can grow our support and keep girls in education no matter what!

We will also have a special campaign during International Women's Week (8-12 March) with all donations up to $50 being matched at 50% by GlobalGiving!

Thank you for your support and we look forward to being in touch with more updates soon.
