EFA focuses on girls from rural, remote areas of Morocco's who are missing out on secondary education due to living too far away from schools and being too poor to afford transport. The 3 main obstacles for girls in rural Morocco to access school are: Their villages are too far away from the secondary schools Their families are too poor to afford the travel costs There is low awareness of and value for educating girls Summary Girls in rural Morocco have traditionally missed out on education due to living in remote villages far from schools. We work with our partners in the High Atlas Mountains region outside Marrakech to empower marginalised Moroccan girls by providing access to education as well as educational and extra curricular support. This project will raise funds to support the running of these operations and the short- & long-term recovery of damaged operations post Earthquake. Challenge In the poorest and most remote villages of Morocco's High Atlas region, girls miss out on school due to poverty and lack of transportation. This leads to high levels of illiteracy among girls and women up to 70%. As a result, they often end up in early marriages, lacking essential skills to cope with life challenges. This perpetuates poverty within their communities and hinders their ability to contribute to society. Solution We want to empower marginalised Moroccan girls to break break this cycle and fulfil their potential. We support established partners, adapt and 're-build' their post-earthquake service capacity for girls, and new partners with complimentary projects sharing the same vision. We have been changing the lives and communities in the Mountains for 17 years and we need your support to continue this work. Long-Term Impact These girls break the cycle of poverty. An educated girl tends to marry at a later age and has higher earning power that allows her to provide for her family, contribute to the global economy and elevate her community. The girls are able to lead healthier, more productive lives and have more control and power so reducing gender inequality. The longer-term impact is that these young women will be able to become financially independent, contribute to the workforce and economy and have more choice and voice in their families and society, ensuring progressive equality for future generations. They have also inspired a positive shift in attitudes in their communities towards educating girls, and are strong role models to their sisters and friends, demonstrating what is possible for them and how to realise their potential through education.
