Education for All in Kaolack, Senegal

Since October, coinciding with the start of the school year, the Diapalante Community Centre in Kaolack has once again opened its doors, welcoming members into a new year of learning, growth, and shared opportunity. Guided by its founding principle, “Diapalante: Education for All,” the Centre continues its mission to make education accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.

At the heart of the Centre’s work are basic classes in reading, writing, oral expression, and mathematics, offered in both French and English. These courses are thoughtfully designed to meet the diverse needs of our members. For many, this is their very first experience of formal learning. A significant number of participants never had the chance to attend school, and are now discovering, often for the first time, the French and English alphabets. This first step opens the door not only to literacy, but to greater independence, confidence, and opportunity.

The impact of this learning can be seen clearly in the everyday lives of our members. Modou, one of the Centre’s participants, recently shared his pride in a personal milestone. Thanks to the classes at Diapalante, he is now able to write down his clients’ phone numbers in his diary—something he was previously unable to do. While he is still working to improve his handwriting, this progress represents a transformative step. It allows him to manage his small business more effectively, strengthen his relationships with clients, and carry out his work with greater confidence and professionalism. His achievement reflects the very real and practical value of education in empowering individuals.

The Centre also plays a vital role in supporting members who work in the informal sector. Shopkeepers, mechanics, domestic workers, fuel attendants, and others come to develop essential skills such as reading and writing invoices, using calculators, and learning the professional vocabulary relevant to their trades. These skills help them manage their businesses more efficiently, increase their income, and better support their families. Many also gain the ability to assist their children with schoolwork, strengthening educational progress across generations.

In addition to adult learners, the Centre welcomes school-aged students who attend reinforcement classes to strengthen their academic skills and prepare for exams. These young people are motivated to pursue further education, and the support they receive—both from instructors and from their peers—equips them with the tools they need to succeed. Their determination brings energy and optimism to the Centre, and their progress is a source of great pride for the entire community.

Parents, too, have witnessed the difference the Centre makes. Aida, whose daughter attends reinforcement classes, shared that the support and guidance provided have been instrumental in her daughter’s academic success. Within the Centre’s encouraging learning environment, and with access to appropriate resources, her daughter has gained both stronger academic skills and greater self-confidence. Her experience reflects the broader impact of the Centre not only on individual learners, but on families as a whole.

To further support learning, the Centre also provides free access to the Internet, enabling members to conduct research, explore new topics, and deepen their knowledge. This access to information broadens horizons and complements classroom learning, giving members the tools to continue learning independently.

Beyond its educational role, the Diapalante Community Centre has become a place of connection, mutual support, and shared purpose. It is an inclusive space where people of all ages come together, creating a rich environment of intergenerational learning. Members encourage one another, share experiences, and grow together in confidence and capability.

Many of those who come to the Centre were previously excluded from formal education. Yet their determination to learn is both inspiring and deeply moving. Through their commitment and perseverance, and through the support offered by the Centre, they are building new opportunities for themselves, their families, and their community.

In conclusion, the Diapalante Community Centre continues to have a meaningful and lasting impact in Kaolack. By expanding access to education and fostering a supportive learning environment, the Centre is helping to build a more empowered, confident, and connected community. Today we have chosen to tell you about Aminata. Aminata, 11, is a bright and dedicated student in the penultimate year of primary school. The second daughter in her family, she has a supportive home environment that nurtures learning and knowledge-sharing.

Aminata has thrived at the Diapalante Community Education Centre. Two years ago she joined the Centre’s Young Leaders program, as a learner. This programme strengthens French reading, writing, and speaking skills through fun and educational activities. French is our national language and is used in school, though it is no-one’s mother tongue. In these two years Aminata has made remarkable progress academically while gaining self-confidence. At home, she also shares her learning with her younger siblings, enjoying her chance to roleplay being a “Young Leader”.

This year, Aminata also participated in the Centre’s basic computer course, acquiring essential digital skills that open new doors for her future. Her dream is to become a doctor, contributing to the health and well-being of her community.

Aminata’s journey illustrates the transformative impact of the Diapalante Centre on young lives. Her mother has regularly thanked us, saying she is delighted with Aminata’s strong academic results - a clear sign of the positive impact of our program on her educational journey.
