Dear Friends of Dharamsala Animal Rescue,

Today, I want to share the story of Tiger. Tiger lives on the street and had been wandering around with a huge tumour. Unfortunately, no one in the community alerted us. Luckily, a member of the DAR team happened to see him, so he was brought into the clinic.

To get a second opinion and some testing done on the tumor, we took him to Palampur Veterinary College, an hour and a half away where they have a much more sophisticated lab. They confirmed that it was a benign tumour which was a relief to hear.

Our two vets Dr Harry and Dr Vinay, along with their assistant Sanjay, performed a surgical resection to remove the tumour, and Tiger is now tumour free and recovering well. He is going to find it much easier to move around now as the tumour weighed 2.5 kg!!

Every day we treat cases of animals on the streets that are injured, sick, weak, and in need of care and we cannot do it without your support.

Luckily, on September 16th, $70,000 in matching money becomes available on Global Giving for the FINAL BONUS DAY of the year and 30% of your donation will be matched until funds run out.

The Face of Despair- and how you can help on Bonus Day!

Dear DAR friends,

This is a story of all of the nameless puppies we see on the streets every day. If you are an animal person, I am sure you have seen the following before:

One female dog can produce 2 litters of 6 - 10 puppies per year.

This means one unspayed female and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in 6 years.

An estimate 80% of the dogs will be euthanized in shelters.

Why Spay? Do you know 67,000 people who want a new dog?

These statistics are for western countries only.

In India, instead of the 80% of the dogs being euthanized, they will die as puppies of starvation, parvo, distemper and poisoning. As adults, they may die beatings and car accidents. To me, euthanasia sounds like a dream come true for these dogs.
In Dharamsala, about 1% of the human population will adopt a local breed or street dog. The rest, if they get a dog, it will be a breed dog bought from a pet shop. The only street dogs that will be adopted are black males because they are thought to have spiritual/protective auras.
In Dharamsala, people are still dying of rabies due to getting bitten by an unvaccinated stray.
So Why Spay? Do you have to still ask?

This puppy, is the only surviving puppy of her litter. The rest died of disease and car accidents from what we were told. Since she is a female, she will never have a home except for the streets. Same as her mother. In order to humanely control the population and create a sustainable amount of dogs on the streets that we can keep healthy, the only way, is our ABC/AR (Animal Birth Control) program.

Please consider donating to this program on Global Giving Bonus Day on July 15th. We are trying to raise $20,000 for this program. Here are some of the associated monthly costs:

Cost for a female spay and post operative care (based on 3 day stay): $35

Cost for a male neuter and post operative care (based on 3 day stay): $27

Monthly Total: 60 dogs per month (total based on 30/30) = $1860

Salary of Vet for ABC/AR project: $400

Salary of a Vet Assistant: $140

Monthly Rent for Clinic: $250

These expenses may seem small from a western perspective, but we only ever have about two months in the bank for our work. If we can raise $20,000 on July 15th, we will be able to breath a sigh of relief.
