Dental Care for School Children

Zahnarztprojekt Projektbericht 3

Dental School Treatments in Kenya

Dental Care in rural areas in Kenya is very difficult to access and people have little or no knowledge with regard to maintaining their oral health. This can have major implications, especially as oral health and general health are so closely correlated. Children are often strongly affected by bad oral health, as it can impact their lives negatively on many levels. Apart from health problems it might affect them socially, it affects their overall well-being and can prevent them from performing well in school or attending at all.

Dentists for Africa thus places an emphasis on providing prophylactic measures to children at schools. $170 have so far been donated to our project “Providing Dental Care to 1200 Vulnerable Children in Kenya”. This money has been used in order to enable DfA-dentists Sr. Fabian and her team to visit schools and do screenings and, if necessary, invite the children to the dental unit for treatment. The children are being taught how to brush their teeth and maintain their oral health. They all receive toothpaste and toothbrushes. This enables them to perform well in school, maintain their oral and general health and plan their future without any social, aesthetical or physical impairments.
