Cyclone Idai Emergency Relief (39849)

Report

Summary

From the Idai Cyclone (2019), the Sofala province suffered one tropical storm (Chalane) and one more Cyclone (Eloise) in December 2020 and March of 2021 respectively. Furthermore, in face of the COVID-19 situation, particularly in Mozambique, all the schools and public places were closed until March of 2021. But from the mid of March the RP (Republic President) gave the authorisation to re-open the public places, including schools and all its services, observing COVID preventive measures.

The planned activity was to allow ESMABAMA to partake the repairing of the roof of the storeroom for the schools we have in Barada with 1906 students (primary and secondary schools) and 468 boarding students (of which 45% are female). But due to high value of the reparation, ESMABAMA decided to use the fund to rehabilitate classrooms and boarding houses in Barada. All the damages were done by the 2 successive cyclones Idai and Eloise.

Challenges

Managing the re-opening of the schools during the COVID-19 situation was really a big challenge. ESMABAMA had to organize preventive measures for all the 7.000 students and 2.000 boarding students for its 4 community centres: water and soap, new classrooms and boarding houses to divide students and boarding students, masks,...

Outside of the COVID 19 situation, the main challenge of ESMABAMA is ensure the functioning of all the schools, boarding schools, health centres in its community centres localized in the 3 districts of Buzi, Chibabava and Machanga. Particularly to manage schools, ESMABAMA only depends on funders because the bigger proportion of the students are from disadvantaged families who have little or no capabilities to pay school fees let alone boarding school fees.

The other challenge we are facing due to the damaged buildings is not being able to offer to the community the high-quality social services needed, while they don’t have other alternative schools or boarding schools or health cares in these areas. In our rural intervention areas there are no other health centres and boarding schools except for those run by ESMABAMA.

Results

Before the beginning of the academic year (March 2021), ESMABAMA organized, in Barada, all the conditions to receive the students and boarding students, providing basic pedagogical material for the schools, domestic materials for the boarding schools, and protection material against COVID19. Specifically, ESMABAMA rehabilitated the roof of some classroom and boarding school in Barada, changing roofing sheet and some parts of ceiling in plywood. Between February and March, ESMABAMA received visits from the Education Provincial Services to check if all the conditions were met and if the schools were able to open officially. Then, the schools opened from the 22 of March of 2021.

Next step

ESMBAMA has still some rehabilitation works to improve the general conditions of the community centres, particularly the technical school, primary school and maternity ward in Estaquinha, secondary and primary schools, boarding schools in Mangunde and secondary and primary school, bathrooms and storeroom in Machanga. Moreover, it will be necessary to continue providing COVID19 preventive materials for the teachers and students.
