Together, after Cyclone Gezani, we rise again!

By Virginia Wiltse | CRMF Executive Director

Clean water prevents cholera!
Clean water prevents cholera!

On February 10, Cyclone Gezani devastated urban and rural Toamasina, Madagascar, impacting 99% of the population. It destroyed homes and businesses, damaged the city's electrical grid, and halted the projects that CRMFand ONG St. Gabriel have built for a quarter of a century.

Since then, with remarkable support from CRMF donors, nonstop efforts by our partners, and the resilience of Malagasy people, the repair and recovery has moved forward with energy!

Here are a few of the accomplishments:

Using its Ranotsara water filtering system, CRMF's ONG St. Gabriel partners have supplied clean, potable water to thousands of local citizens, preventing a cholera epidemic.

To offset the nutrition crisis for hundreds of our project beneficiaries, our team provided 4.2 tons of rice, 210 kilos of beans, cooking oil, and 2 tons of nutrition supplement for children under two years of age.

Damage to dwellings left whole families homeless and vulnerable to continued rain. Our team provided 348 sheets of corrugated metal sheeting to replace the roofs that were blown away by the storm.

In the absence of electricity, our team purchased 1,800 hand-held, rechargeable solar lamps insuring both safety at night and the ability to study.

We supplied more than 400 women in our Self-Help Group program with small cash payments that enabled them to repair and restart their damaged businesses, putting them back on the road to economic recovery.

Today, all 12 of our urban literacy centers are open and our technology program for youth is again up and running.

Repairs are complete at the maternity center at Ankirihiry CSB II where our Saving the Lives of Mothers and Babies is based. Most of the repairs are completed at the severely damaged rural Dispensary Antsiramandroso, and reconstruction of the sanitation and water filtering systens continues in our Model Healthy Villages along the Pangalene Canal.

There is still so much to be done but we are on our way!
