On Feb. 10, Cyclone Gezani ravaged Toamasina, Madagascar-flattening neighborhoods, destroying homes, crippling infrastructure and impacting more than 250,000 people. Gezani tore through the heart of CRMF projects in public health, education, medical outreach and economic empowerment. Our project sites have suffered catastrophic damage. Our partners in Madagascar-friends, educators, organizers and community leaders-are in urgent need. Stand with Toamasina to restore dignity and hope.
On February 10, Cyclone Gezani struck Toamasina, Madagascar, where Caring Response Madagascar Foundation has worked with our ONG St. Gabriel partners for more than 25 years. 75% of the city has been damaged or destroyed including many of our project sites. The people we serve are without food, water, shelter, and electricity in the city and along the coastline where our Model Healthy Villages are located. The situation is desperate.
CRMF is mobilizing emergency assistance while preparing for long-term rebuilding in core areas. We remain in active communication with our partners on the ground to assess ongoing impact and coordinate relief. Our partners on the ground have identified the most urgent needs and CRMF is committed to responding as quickly as possible by providing water, food, and supplies needed to begin the rebuilding process. Clean water and safe sanitation are essential to preventing a cholera outbreak.
If we can meet the initial urgent needs of our Toamasina partners and those serve by our projects, we can prevent a further humanitarian crisis, help families re-build their homes and re-open the programs that serve thousands of Toamasina citizens every year.
