Summary

Prochorus uses cycling as a development Whole Life Coaching tool for poor and marginalized kids of the urban and township areas surrounding Stellenbosch in South Africa. The program inspires them to start dreaming again, believe in themselves, see their own potential and opportunities, empowers them to attain success in whatever they set as a personal goal. We intentionally work to develop their Occupational Intelligence, also emotionally, physically, socially, spiritually and intellectually.

Challenge

The children and youth in this community are very vulnerable due to a big lack in positive role models, the influence of substance abuse, gangsterism and crime happening around them. These factors, along with unconducive parenting, peer pressures and not having constructive things to keep them occupied in the afternoons, often results in children dropping out of school early, teenage pregnancies, substance abuse, getting involved with crime and gangsterism.

Solution

Prochorus teaches, coaches and mentors the youth in a fun and natural learning environment. The organisation's facilitators impart values and principles into the lives of the children for better decision-making skills through, two weekly training rides (for each group), small group mentoring sessions, life skills development sessions incorporated with the training rides, life coaching sessions, competitive participating in cycling events and annual team camps.

Long-Term Impact

By empowering the children to make healthy choices and giving them skills to have confidence in their ability to reach their dreams, the project has the potential to deeply and permanently impact each of them, their families and ultimately create a healthy culture in their communities. Part of what we teach them, is to take responsibility and be the change they want to see in their community, as to become leaders of change, not just for themselves, but also those around them.
