Cycle for Survival Update #17

By Katie Pelo | Development Manager

This year you helped raise $39 million for rare cancer research! The money raised will be allocated to Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) labs within six months of the events — fueling lifesaving discoveries at MSK and around the world.

Below are some of the incredible breakthroughs the Cycle for Survival community has already funded thanks to people like you!

1. A new drug developed with Cycle for Survival funding is ready for FDA approval this fall. Larotrectinib is for adults and pediatric patients with a rare mutation in a gene called TRK. It will be the first time a drug is approved for a genetic mutation driving cancer, not a specific cancer type. Larotrectinib has already been granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation and Priority Review by the FDA.

2. Sarcoma immunotherapy collaborations are happening around the country. MSK has the largest sarcoma immunotherapy program in the world with the most ongoing clinical trials and the highest number of people enrolled in clinical trials. Cycle for Survival funding has provided scientists the resources to build a premier research program. MSK-led trials are at hundreds of sites in the United States.

3. Make-an-IMPACT provides DNA sequencing at no cost to patients with select rare cancers. This brand-new initiative focuses on discovering the underlying genetic cause of rare cancers and helps match patients with clinical trials — regardless of where they go for treatment. This unprecedented effort has been made possible largely by Cycle for Survival.

This progress is because of you.

People with rare cancers need better treatments, and MSK is pursuing big and bold ideas to help them. Together with doctors and researchers, we’re opening new doors that will save and extend lives.
