This project supports our mission to deploy climate sensors in remote areas that are presently underserved by the existing network of climate observations. The lack of detailed data about the weather and environment in these areas prevents us from fully understanding the impact of climate change on these communities, including the biodiversity that call these areas home. Or purpose with partners is to distribute sensors globally in remote areas on land, and using our UNESCO project in the ocean.
While warming is global, its effects are felt locally, and the places most vulnerable to climate change typically have insufficient climate information needed to innovate and deliver climate solutions. Many such places do not have sustained environmental observation, as the climate observations on which climate action depends are made at a few thousand fixed locations globally, leaving important natural spaces, often hundreds of kilometers from the nearest observing station.
The 2DegreesC initiative is a low-cost, dynamic network of individuals, each collecting scientifically valid, georeferenced observations by carrying wearable technology in the spaces between the fixed climate observing stations. Using wearable, Low-Cost IOT sensors that are easy to use, our automated sensor technology attached to citizen scientists, can bridge the climate data gap and enhance the resolution and accuracy of climate data by sharing them with scientists and educators worldwide.
Using citizen scientists working and recreating in remote areas, we can collect large volumes of data at a fraction of the cost, from areas that have inadequate coverage, where data are expensive to collect and in places that are often difficult to access and make a sizable impact on the reduction of climate data gaps worldwide. Our project supports the delivery of in-situ observations through sensor deployment along with partner organizations and stakeholders.
