Background

Young children playing and roaming unsupervised is a very common sight in migrant worker’s colonies in Bangalore. With both parents working the whole day, children are left to themselves or an elderly person keeping tabs on all children. Children are extremely undernourished and live in unhygienic surroundings. Their safety is under threat all the time. Children also lose out on their education when they move around with their parents to different places of work.

Sampark realizing the pressing need for day care centres in migrant workers’ colonies runs 28 Early Childhood Care and Development Center (ECCD) in different labor colonies. The children are given a safe place to be and learn basic languages and arts and crafts. Most of the children are under-nourished and the health and nutrition requirements of children are taken care of by providing them breakfast, lunch, and snacks in the evening.

Early Childhood Care and Development Center (ECCD)

The ECCD Centers work from 9.30 am to 5 pm. Children as young as 6 months old are taken in the center. Balwadi consists of children from 3-6 years and Non-Formal Education from the age of 6 to 12 years. The builder provides a place in the labor colony to run the center. Water and electricity are provided by the builder.

In this report we are presenting the data of three ECCD Centers located in Bangalore. The details are as per below:

Centre Name and Address

1. Prestige Waterford -  Pattandur Agrahara, Whitefield, Bengaluru, Karnataka

2. Anand Nagar -  Sanjay Nagar, Marathahalli, Bengaluru, Karnataka

Government school going children                  - 10 girls and 10 boys

In the 3 Centers, we have reached out to 284 children of which are 145 boys and 139 girls.

The early childhood care center plays a crucial role in supporting migrant children and their families. The teachers constantly interact with parents and advise them about the importance of children's health, hygiene and how it affects their growth.

Nutrition

Providing a well-balanced diet rich in nutrients is crucial for children’s growth and development.

Prioritizing children's nutrition at the center. We provide well-balanced nutrition of 600-800 calories per day to the children at the center.

Ragi malt (protein mix) and peanut bars in the morning provide energy and essential nutrients

While kichidi ( rice and pulses mix) and egg in the afternoon offer protein and other vital nutrients.

Including bananas and boiled pulses like channa, groundnut, and green gram alternate days in the evening adds more nutrients to their diet.

The team monitored the height and weight of 186 children ( 92 Girls and 94 boys ), aged below 5 years regularly.Out of 186 children, 34 children were undernourished,

A special diet (Protien mixture ) was provided to the undernourished children and supplementary nutrition such as multivitamins, and iron syrups were also included.  20 children improved their height and weight as per the growth chart.

Health Outreach Programs

Health Program address the immediate healthcare needs of marginalized communities. Undoubtedly, good health is the biggest treasure. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid everything that damages our health or makes us a victim of diseases. Keeping this in mind, Health camps are conducted in the early chilhdcare centres for the children

20 children recieved their age-appropriate immunization and 20 (10 girls and 10 boys). 96 children accessed pulse polio drops.  Children were provided with Vitamin A and Deworming medicines. 8 Pediatric health camps were organized.  183 (98 girls and 85 Boys) children underwent health screening.  Health Cards are maintained for all 183 children.

Sucess Stories

Creating a safe space for children is crucial for working women - Yellamma was able to go to work regular improved her family's income

Yallamma and Raghavendra faced challenges in finding suitable employment opportunities in their village, Raichur, as a result, they decided to move to Bangalore, likely in the hope of better job prospects and improved living conditions. Raghavendra found a job at Rangegowdana Doddi working for daily wages, but the absence of a childcare center has left his wife, Yallamma, unemployed. This situation was challenging for the family, especially with two children to take care of. The family faced financial challenges, which led to various difficulties and stress within the household.

Yallamma was facing significant challenges in managing her family due to her husband's alcoholism. However, Sampark's initiative to start a child care center at the Range Gowdana Doddi site provided her with an opportunity to address some of her difficulties. Yallamma's decision to enroll her elder daughter, Pushpa, in the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Center reflects her commitment to providing a better environment for her children.

Sampark's child care center played a positive role in Yallamma's life, offering support for working mothers like her. Additionally, Yallamma's dedication to her children is evident as she took her younger daughter, Sridevi, with her to the workplace to ensure she could continue breastfeeding and caring for her.

Pushpa's positive transformation after joining the ECCD center in Sampark. Adequate nutrition and proper care play a crucial role in a child's overall development, and it's evident that the efforts at child care have made a significant impact on Pushpa's well-being. She now eats properly, displays emotional stability, and is described as calm and composed. Pushpa's mother has noticed these positives and feels happy for her daughter. Yallamma's decision to start working has had a positive impact on her family's income and overall well-being. Her contributions not only benefit her immediate family but also extend to supporting her parents, fostering a sense of financial stability and security.
