Our ongoing mission is to supply refurbished, second-hand tools from the UK to communities in need in sub-Saharan Africa. These kits are used to train and teach single mothers, widows, unemployed youths, street children, elderly, refugees, and other vulnerable people in a new career such as tailoring - giving them a sustainable future. We believe that tools provide a permanent, practical way to combat poverty! We send over 20 shipments from the UK every year, coming to over 20,000 tools.
Deep-seated poverty and unemployment in Sub-Saharan countries such as Zambia, Tanzania, and Uganda mean that vulnerable people and rural communities can't afford or access quality equipment, particularly in areas hit by environmental hardship. Many recipients - such as single mothers, unemployed youth, refugees, and the disabled - struggle to earn, find work, or start businesses due to a lack of both tools and education, as tools locally are often expensive, low-quality, or hard to obtain.
By providing toolkits to start a livelihood, TWAM builds sustainability, self-confidence, and self-reliance. We collect, refurbish and ship 20,000 tools a year to dedicated charities or training centres who support people with little or no access to basic equipment. These trainees use TWAM tools to learn a trade, giving them hope and the skills needed to build a career for themselves in diverse trades such as tailoring and IT, rather than relying on unsustainable day labour or cash handouts.
In 2024, TWAM benefited 2000 causes across 500 organisations, helping thousands of people - many of whom will go on to share their new skills with others, transforming entire communities. The Long-term impact includes turning marginalised individuals into skilled, earning adults; creating micro-businesses; strengthening local services; reducing poverty; equipping education; building community resilience and enterprise; and helping whole regions transition from vulnerability to self-reliance.
