Because of your support, 30 teachers from 8 schools in both Greater Accra Region and Eastern Region have been trained by our partner, Ghana Code Club. During the 2nd term (Jan to April), 200 girls participated in coding clubs in these schools.
Over the course of the term, the girls meet weekly to work on projects. A competition is organised at the end of the term to ascertain the in-depth knowledge of the programming language taught.
For their projects, the coding club participants were asked to identify a societal problem and use their skills and knowledge in HTML, Scratch or mobile app development to provide sustainable solutions. They got creative!
Some of the girls who had an entrepreneurial mindset developed websites intended to share Ghana’s locally produced automobile, food, fabric and services to the world. Some teams worked on a game to create awareness on sanitation (see photo).
Others who have seen the power of educational technology built games and an interactive times table to better their knowledge in mathematics, while another team created an app to assist students in understanding vocabulary and hearing the correct pronunciation. With inclusion in mind, another team built a mobile app to help the physically challenged to read, by using the built-in text-to-voice function.
Resource Persons are invited during the competition day to assist the girls in bettering their presentation skills. During the competition, students had to pitch their creation, discuss their approach, and defend their code. They were confident, and answered judges’ questions well. Applause and congratulatory messages were coming from the judges and resource persons at the end of the day and they all went home happy!
There is a national competition coming up this July to test their programming knowledge since the inception of this project, and how they can use their knowledge and skills to better the lives of their community members and the country as a whole. Stay tuned!
