500 more Green Rhinos!!
By Diti Mookherjee | Project Leader
Dear Supporter,
We are thrilled to let you know that 500 more Green Rhinos were inducted into the Program on 19 and 20 September 2013 on 3 remote islands in the Sundarbans. These students from 6 local government schools received orientation about the Program which included a presentation on the “Nature of Sundarbans”.
50 Green Rhinos will be chosen from the 6 participating schools and will receive transformational leadership training in October/ November 2013. They will design a six month project which they will implement with fellow Green Rhinos in their school.
All the Green Rhinos received a solar lamp under ASED’s Solar Lamps Project as they live in non-electrified areas.
There are now 1100+ Green Rhinos in India! As part of their project, the Green Rhinos in the Sundarbans are planting 6000 tree saplings this month!
We thank you for being part of this great team!
With gratitude,
Diti

Green Rhinos sharing their project
Dear Donor,
With your support, 276 Green Rhinos were created in the Sundarbans in March 2013. 76 Green Rhinos were created on 24 March on K-Plot Island and 200 Green Rhinos were created on Maipith Island on 25 March.
All the Green Rhinos received solar lamps since there is no electricity in their villages. Events were held on both the islands where they were briefed about the Green Rhinos Program and given an audio-visual presentation on the “Nature of Sundarbans”. Green Rhinos who had been inducted into the Program last year shared how they had planted tree saplings. They said that were unable to save all the saplings as the goats and cows ate some of them. The parents of some of these youth and other members of the community were present. We appealed to them to help the youth to protect the saplings by creating tree guards and keeping their animals away from the plants.
30 Green Rhino leaders received the transformational leadership training in April. The projects that they have identified include planting 5000 tree saplings and cleaning garbage from 60 water bodies. These projects will be conducted by all the 276 Green Rhinos.
Thank you for your continued support. You are making a difference in the lives of the Green Rhinos and helping to protect the Sundarbans!
With warm regards,
Diti

A Green Rhino sharing with the new batch
Dear Donor,
On 16 and 17 March 2013, on the remote islands of K-Plot and Maipith in the Sundarbans, 300 new Green Rhinos were initiated into the Program.
These Green Rhinos are poor, meritorious students who live on these islands where there is no electricity. They were provided solar lamps from ASED's Solar Lamps Project, http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/solar-lamps-for-students-in-sundarbans-india/. They were inducted into the Green Rhinos Program with a seminar on the nature of the Sundarbans and how they can protect it. Green Rhinos, who have been conducting projects since 2012, shared their experiences.
The events created an excitement among the village community and the parents of the students, school teachers and local people came to watch. They were urged to help the Green Rhinos make their village a greener and cleaner place to live.
The leadership training for the new batch of Green Rhinos will be held on 4 April 2013.
The movement is gaining momentum!
Many thanks for your support.
Diti
