Challenge

In 2014 ISIS terrorists invaded various parts of Iraq, killing untold numbers of civilians. In August 2014, ISIS invaded the city of Sinjar and surrounding areas, home to a ethno-religious minority population, the Yezidis. The terrorists killed the men and captured the women and girls, forcing them into abhorrent sexual slavery. Some girls managed to escape or were rescued through third parties. These women and girls are in desperate need of projects that ensure a brighter future.

Solution

The Enterprise & Training Center (ETC) houses an assortment of initiatives, projects, and centers to empower Yezidis, with a focus on Yezidi women. Through activities, trainings, and enterprise opportunities, participants have the chance to develop tools, improve their economic prospects, collect relevant information, and begin earning income. This innovative livelihoods campus is designed to provide targeted, useful education and skills training for Yezidis, especially women.

Long-Term Impact

Through training in weaving and knitting, these women become economic actors. They start earning an income and understand the idea of a sustainable way of living. By empowering these women, we provide important economic tools, knowledge, and the possibility of economic growth for a population that has been traumatised by genocide and badly marginalised for centuries.
