As we wrap up this project on GlobalGiving, we wanted to take a moment to give huge thanks to you for your generous contribution to our humanitarian relief in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, Colombia, and Bolivia.
As is the case in almost all disasters and emergency situations, women have been hardest hit by the pandemic, since it began over three years ago.
Often being the primary caregivers for children, the sick and the elderly, they are most likely to be exposed to the virus.
They are also more likely to work in insecure, informal jobs – the first to be cut in a crisis.
Meanwhile, the pandemic has unleashed a surge in violence against women and girls across the world, made worse by being locked down or quarantined at home, with little or no access to life-saving services and support networks.
Due to the closure of schools, girls have been put at greater risk of experiencing violence at home – even leading to increases in teenage pregnancies.
In April 2020, ActionAid declared an emergency response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our global response aimed to support close to 15 million people across 40 countries, particularly women and girls and marginalised groups.
In Brazil, Colombia, and Bolivia, our priorities have been the prevention and containment of Covid-19; protection of women and girls; and providing urgent aid including food and water.
As in all emergencies, we have put into action our women-led, localised response to the pandemic: promoting women's leadership, ensuring women are empowered to make decisions about the needs of their community, and amplifying the voices and representation of women in humanitarian decision-making spaces.
Through our global COVID-19 response, we have reached over 25 million people with our life-saving support: delivering food supplies, distributing essentials like soap and water, funding women’s shelters and combating the spread of misinformation with awareness-raising projects like local radio broadcasts.
This work would not be possible without partners like you: caring individuals who are willing to give what they can.

Thank you so much for supporting this project. I am writing to update you about our Covid-19 relief efforts in Brazil, Colombia, and Bolivia. We appreciate you taking your time to learn about our work and act in response to this crisis.
ActionAid always puts women, girls, and other marginalized communities at the forefront of our work. These communities are the most vulnerable to climate disaster, displacement, and other humanitarian crises. As a result of your dedication to these issues, our work is continuing as planned. We have disseminated important public health information, provided dignity and hygiene kits, and provided safe spaces for women and girls to prevent gender-based violence.
We are glad to have you be a part of this movement; humanitarian work has never been more critical. Your commitment to equity makes a difference.

ActionAid’s humanitarian signature continues to focus on local leadership that is women-led and rights-based, because we know that pandemics, climate disasters, conflicts, and displacements disproportionally affect women and marginalized populations. Thanks to your continued support, we’ve been able to continue our plans on educating local leaders on Covid-19 prevention, disseminating important health information and materials, providing dignity and hygiene kits, and preventing cases of gender-based violence by providing safe spaces for women and girls.
If you can, please consider sharing this project with your network, so we can continue to support those on the frontlines of poverty and injustice. Now more than ever, your commitment to justice makes a difference. Thank you for your support and solidarity.

The pandemic is not over. As variants continue to affect countries around the world, many more lives and livelihoods are at stake.
Covid-19 has destroyed the livelihoods of many of the world’s most vulnerable people, especially in Brazil. The majority of those affected are women who were working in informal and insecure employment, often the first jobs to be cut in a crisis.
But we know that long-term recovery – like rebuilding and restoring livelihoods - requires long-lasting change. Thanks to your commitment, we’ve been able support communities with an eye towards the future. In the Folha Largo community in São João do Arrail, for example, ActionAid installed a 5,000-liter water tank to benefit 150 people and their families. Access to a reliable water source means that families will no longer have to worry about where to find water to drink, cook with, wash with, and farm with, as they work to build back their lives.
Even as the pandemic continues to evolve, your commitment to human rights matters. Thank you for your support.
