Tafel Deutschland e.V. is the national association of food banks and community pantries in Germany. Our network of over 60,000 volunteers at nearly 960 branches nationwide is working to safely provide food and other resources to around 2 million beneficiaries throughout the country, many of whom are especially vulnerable to Covid-19 due to their age or preexisting health conditions along with those impacted by the economic downturn.
The war in Ukraine and inflation are challenging the food. The number of Tafel customers has increased sharply in many places, while at the same time food donations are declining. Rising fuel and operating costs are placing an additional burden on the food banks. In order to maintain their services, the food banks are particularly dependent on support now.
The food banks do their best to protect their helpers and customers: for example, through additional protective measures, educational initiatives or the conversion of the distribution rooms. Some food banks have even set up delivery services to deliver food to the door. More than 27 percent of the food banks conducted vaccination campaigns for their customers and food bank workers. For the majority of the food banks, work has become more complex in the last two years.
The goal of raising $1,000,000 averages out to less than 1,000 euros per Tafel and does not seem like much in that context, but the intent of this project is to increase the capacity of Tafel Deutschland e.V. to support our national network in the areas where the most action is needed: volunteer recruitment and management, operational adaptations and expansion, as well as food sourcing and logistics.
