Covid-19 Resource Mapping in Kenya and Kibera
From the moment the first case of Covid-19 was reported in Kenya, Map Kibera has been quite busy ensuring that the right information is distributed to the community in Kibera. This is to curb the misinformation that was going around about the disease and also sharing relevant information crowdsourced from various channels on what they need to do to fight the disease and flatten the curve.
In partnership with Ushahidi, Map Kibera set up Kenya Covid-19 tracker to track the spread of Covid-19 in Kenya and Kibera and to also map out resources that are being provided by the government, NGOs and well wishers to the residents of Kibera. In the last couple of months over 3000 posts have been added on the platform. Around 2000 of them are daily reports that are released by the Ministry of Health of the number of positive cases that have been reported around the country, number of recoveries and number of deaths. Over 250 resources have also been mapped in the platform, this includes hand wash points, food distribution, masks, soap and sanitary pads distribution within Kibera. We also have posts on news items, articles and blogs crowdsourced from various media channels both local, national and international. Several organizations have also gotten a chance to add their own work on the site.
Kibera News Network (KNN) has been in the field covering stories in Kibera, including topics like the effects of Covid-19 on students living in Kibera and whether they manage to afford e-learning. They have also been covering the views of Kibera residents on some of the directives issued by the Government of Kenya such as curfews, lockdowns and many other stories. KNN have also been running their Whatsapp broadcast to share information to the residents of Kibera, like posts from Kenya Covid-19 platform, daily virus case updates issued by the Ministry of Health, and stories that they have covered. KNN has also been using the Whatsapp broadcast to help verify rumours and misinformation about COVID-19. This video investigates the impact of the donations on livelihoods of small business owners.
