We are working on information sharing and community education on Covid in the Kibera slum, and resource and case mapping countrywide. The Kibera News Network team is documenting Covid-related challenges and sharing local efforts using video and social media, while dispelling rumors and sharing health messages and information using video and WhatsApp. Mappers are using Ushahidi software to map all Kenya's Covid cases, and working with organizations to map their efforts around the country.
Kenya is currently seeing a daily increase in cases of Covid-19. But many different organizations as well as government agencies are pitching in and developing new efforts to slow the spread of the disease. These efforts and cases themselves have not yet been well documented together on maps. Additionally, Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya, will possibly be hard hit by the virus if accurate information about Covid prevention does not reach the population.
1) Our Ushahidi-based website, https://kenyacovid19.ushahidi.io, where we are crowdsourcing initiatives to help address Covid in communities around Kenya AND tracking current cases by location; 2) Kibera News Network is documenting the impact of the virus and distancing and lockdown measures, using both video at www.youtube.com/kiberanewsnetwork, and Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/kiberanews/; 3) KNN is also providing factual Covid information via WhatsApp to Kibera people.
We expect these efforts to help make sure that there is correct information out there about Covid-19 throughout Kenya, and that people will know about efforts to slow and address the disease which are happening. We also expect that Kibera will be healthier and that the voices of the people in the slums will be heard. KNN is always committed to telling the story of Kibera from the perspective of residents.
