How a small therapeutic riding center in NH plans to give the pandemic a KICK! Fighting back against depression and isolation in the time of Covid 19.
Children with pre-existing mental and physical disabilities are at utmost risk during this pandemic. Most online platforms are not compatible with assistive technology used for teaching children with disabilities. The US has seven million children between 3-21 receiving special education classes at school. Change in routine, loss of recreation, and need for social distancing all negatively affects these children, placing them at higher risk for clinically significant mental health issues.
Therapeutic riding adapted to the constraints of the Covid 19 Pandemic provides a safe activity to mitigate the effects of abrupt loss of routine, social distancing, lack of regular classroom instruction, and absence of recreational opportunities faced by children with disabilities. With safety protocols in place, children interact with their horse while participating in outdoor therapeutic activities fostering connection, physical activity, and fun. We offer a brief respite from Covid cares.
BITS community of staff, volunteers, clients and supporters works together today so our most vulnerable suffer fewer long-lasting effects of Covid 19. Children from forty families connect with horses each week, riding towards wellness. And in the process the teacher and the taught, the paid and the volunteer are present together and experience their own healing with community connection, and safe outdoor recreation in this time of Covid, and beyond.
