With the new year, we are reviewing the program achievements and where we've hit obstacles. We've designed a survey to assess community interest in specific programs related to English and building job competency skills. The demographics of those agreeing to answer the survey will also help us target our audience. In the meantime, Finn has been out scouting for a location closer to Phrao, as the distance to our facility - 20 km south of the town of Phrao, has been a limiting factor.
Our chief of staff has just rebuilt his family home and has offered to let us use space there as it is in town. On one of these forays, Finn met the owner of a new restaurant in Pradu, which is a good-sized village 5 km from Warm Heart. The proprietor offered to let Finn teach classes there and will give us some retail space for our farm garden produce and our new product - vermicast.
We have a volunteer from Canada who is a former English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher who is teaching small groups of students to give them personalized attention and overcome some of their shyness. Geoff is planning to stay for one year, which will give us time to see the impact of his teaching. Josh is a college student from the US working on finance and fundraising, but pitches in to help with English conversation.. Finn has organized classes with different age groups spread over the week. He's always there to make sure the students are focused and explain when there is a language translation snag.
Finn continues to support former students in their jobs and at university. Our nursing students call on Finn when they're stuck in their English homework. Nong Sai is working in the refugee camps near Mae Hong Song and calls Finn to practice and ask questions,
We're taking steps to re-assess our target audience and chart a path forward. The informal schools continue to ask for some English classes but have not set a schedule to date. Finn will hold workshops with shopkeepers around Phrao to attract a broader audience. He continues to take on individuals in the community who can do remote learning as well.
Your gift keeps this essential program rolling forward. We'll keep you posted as we fine-tune the next phase.
Many thanks and best wishes for the New Year!
Dana, Evelind, Michael, and the Warm Heart UPskills team.
