Technology to support coral reef research

By Cheryl Martin | Project reporter

We thank you for your ongoing support of this project.

We have monitored the coral reef ecosystems around the North West of Mahe for over 15 years. Your support has helped us produce one of the longest reaching data sets of the Western Indian Ocean in partnership with the Seychelles National Parks Authority. Our purpose is to find ways to understand further and protect the reef.

Following Reef Care International methodology,  we survey reefs to monitor the health of existing coral, find evidence of new young coral, and collect data on fish species present in the area.

Utilizing technologies is essential in coral reef monitoring. One of these technologies we have used recently is photogrammetry. It is where a piece of software uses motion algorithms and hundreds of overlapping pictures our team have taken of the reef to create high-resolution maps. This 3D modelling can help to evaluate the details of the reef precisely. It also provides information on the structural complexity of the reef, giving valuable insight into coral reef ecological dynamics.

The photogrammetry process gives us valuable, detailed insight into the reef's health and has the added advantage of showcasing beautiful corals so we can highlight the importance of their conservation to a broader audience.

Your support allows us to keep exploring new technologies to monitor the reef and continue our current data collection processes. Our other work, such as the international citizen science Coral Watch project and Dive Against Debris, are also possible thanks to your support.

Coral Watch collects data across the globe. It is a crucial partnership for us so that data from Seychelles can be part of the global picture. Coral Watch aims to monitor coral bleaching and recovery events around the globe. The Coral Health Chart records coral colour changes, which is an indicator of coral health. We make a valuable contribution to the world database.

Dive Against Debris is getting out there and collecting Debris from the ocean. Plastics and other lightweight waste are collected as part of this program to reduce the impact on the reef.

Of course, the key to change is education. Our project also works to educate children and adults in the community on a broader scale through social media and other reporting channels. Our photogrammetry work will allow us to share images that capture attention and interest in educating people about coral reef preservation.

If we are to make a difference, we need to engage in this range of programmes to monitor, educate, and take action. Your valuable support can keep our coral reef project moving forward and support us to impact coral reef conservation.
