In Nigeria, flood is presently a challenge, in 2012, millions of Nigerians were affected and displaced with this epidemic. The flood caused deaths of over 300 people in the country. Property worth billions of naira were destroyed as a result of the flood. The flood was caused due to non-availability of drainage by the government, indiscriminate dumping of refuges by citizens and blockage of canals The communities that are prone to flooding are the beneficiary of this project in Nigeria.
The proposed project will reduce the impact of flood disaster in communities that are more vulnerable to flooding in Nigeria, through the training and empowering of community leaders and stakeholders on flood disaster prevention and management through community flood sensitization programmes. Appropriate government authority will be reached on the need to embark on the construction of drainage and opening up of canals for easy flow of water whenever there is flood disaster.
The long term results of this project is the drastically reduction of the impact of flood disaster in vulnerable communities. Communities will be encouraged to form the habits of carrying out regular environmental sanitation exercise where drainage blocked with refuges will be disposed and opened for easy flood of water. Over 100 rural and flood prone communities will be reached and benefit from this project directly, while the entire country will be the indirect beneficiary of this project.
