This crowdfunding project got off to a very slow start as activities were hampered by both the covid pandemic and climate change. The rains started three months late and the seedlings that were planted early died. Thirty- two girls then planted seeds which germinated. Of these plants 11 were stolen and others wilted during the following three dry weeks. The result was that only ten of the intended ‘firewood trees’ are growing. We could not plant more, as the collection of seeds had happened at the very end of their season and no seeds were on sale. Alas no-one thought of planting similar trees.
However, the attendance of the girls on Saturday mornings was 85% and the lectures covered Tiko’s steps from permaculture/conservation farming, climate-smart agriculture, and agroforestry. No less than five new methods of climate-smart integrated agriculture that Tiko had learned in Uganda were introduced, as well as family planning.
All of the girls in the project now have a clay-stove at their home. They protected them safely with plastic covers during the rains and are now waiting for the construction of an open-air kitchens. Thanks to a truly magnificent donation Tiko has received the money needed for the project and will continue to provide the girls’ families with their open-air kitchens, one by one, having a chance that in this way will be able to ensure that the new way of cooking is actually being followed.
Despite the difficulties, we can say that the goal of the project will have been reached.
+++ There will be a new project very soon, please stay with us! +++
Our most heart-felt thanks to all the kind donors.
