The problem the rural communities are facing in Togo is acute shortage of toilets and a serious problem of water and sanitation and the issue of open defecation. The aim of our intervention is to build 10 community toilets in 5 villages of the Township of Attitogon, not only to improve the sanitary situation and help resolving the issue of open defecation but also to strengthen the health aspects of these communities and, also to raise their pride and prestige.
According to UNICEF and WHO estimations, about 1/7th of world population still openly defecates in the absence of any toilet/latrine, of which 60% live in Togo. Global impact of poor sanitation on human health and infant/ child death is profound.
