CONSTRUCTING CLASSROOMS FOR CHILDREN WITH DYSLEXIA

By Phyllis Munyi | Director

History

Rare Gem Talent School was founded in 2012. In its first term of operation, it had seven students, two teachers and one support staff.

It was registered by the Ministry of Education as a special needs school in 2015 and as an examination centre for KCPE in the same year. Students sat for their first KCPE at Rare Gem Talent School in 2016.

In 2016, the boarding facilities of the school were outstretched, the school started encouraging parents from Kitengela and its environs to have their students going back home in the evening. The students are picked at strategic places in the morning by the school van and delivered back in the evening.

In 2017, the school started a secondary school. The first cohort wrote their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) in 2021.

School Population and Distribution

The school is registered as a special school. As at beginnin of 2021, the school had a population of 172 children ranging from kindergateen, primary and secondary school with ranging learning dfficulties and special needs.

It admits students who have specific learning difficulties which include autism, dyslexia, bi polar syndrome, auditory processing disorders, and communication disorders. The school also admits regular students who do not have learning difficulties too.

 Infrastructure

The entire school block is on a rented ¼ acre plot that occupies the classes, playfield, kitchen, and the boarding rooms where girls and boys both in primary and secondary school sleep.

Space has been our main challenge.  Having teenage children and other children withing same compound is challenge and risk that must be overcome every single day.

The monthly rent has been big challenge especially during this COVID-19 period which interfered with the school programs.

Risk of COVID-19 is very high; Social distancing is impracticable.

Construction of Classroom

In 2020, when the world was struggling with COVID-19 and school life so uncertain, our bank extended a loan that was used to purchase a acre plot for the school.  This will enable us to construct the school complex, classroom for pre-school, primary and high school, the boarding rooms, kitchen, library, and playground.

This project intends to raise funds to construct the school complex.  The new compound will address the challenges of space, having the teenage and kindergarten children in the same compound, and the monthly rent.

We are seeking the funds so that we can provide the children with facility that takes care of all their needs, education, skills, and a place that would reduce the risk of COVID-19.
