By Christopher Ekuwom | Project Leader
Forty Lomopus community leaders are actively managing their riverine rangeland to ensure both sustainable development and the preservation of the ecosystem. They have designated areas for development and livestock grazing, while protecting the riverine habitat to secure long-term livestock fodder and food for local families. In areas where charcoal burning is widespread along the Turkwel River, they have acted decisively to discourage it. Their leadership has also helped prevent tree cutting, unplanned development, and overgrazing.
These actions are critical in combating deforestation and reducing the impacts of climate change, while safeguarding the land for future generations. However, the project’s main activities remain pending due to a lack of sufficient funding. The community and project team are fully prepared to act as soon as resources become available. The readiness to implement means that once funds are secured, activities will begin without delay.
Planned interventions include promoting sustainable grazing practices, planting 1,500 trees, and constructing four water harvesting structures. The project will also reseed degraded grazing lands and work with 10 local committees to develop a sustainable land management plan. These actions are designed to restore vegetation, improve soil health, and protect the environment. Together, they will strengthen the productivity and resilience of the rangeland ecosystem.
In addition, the project will focus heavily on water conservation and effective water management systems. Community education and awareness programs will be implemented to promote stewardship of natural resources. Strengthening existing community-based initiatives will remain a top priority. Through these combined efforts, the Lomopus community leaders aim to secure a resilient, sustainable, and thriving rangeland for present and future generations.
