This project will work with over 120,000 pure pastoralists to restore the Lokitela Etuko grazing lands ecosystem. The project's major activities will include planting 1500 indigenous trees, reseeding degraded lands, building 4 water harvesting structures, facilitating community-led sustainable land and water management initiatives, implementing environmental education and awareness programs, and strengthening existing community-based conservation efforts.
Lokitela Etuko grazing lands are home to over 120,000 pastoralists. Over 500,000 shoats and camels are on the verge of being lost due to severe environmental degradation and climate change challenges. The grazing lands are currently affected by overgrazing, deforestation, and climate change challenges which have badly affected the pastoralists' lives and their livestock-based livelihoods.
This project will undertake to restore these grazing lands by adopting a holistic approach that will involve employing sustainable grazing practices, planting 1500 trees, creating 4 water harvesting structures, reseeding the grazing lands, working with the 10 committees and communities to develop sustainable land management plan, water conservation, and management system plan, providing education and awareness to the communities, and strengthening the current community-based initiatives.
The project will have benefited over 120000 pastoralists by enabling them to restore their grazing lands. The project will have established and empowered the 10 pastoralists' committees responsible for the sustainable management of the grazing lands. The pastoralists' livestock will become healthier and various households will realize improved food security.
