In Detroit, only 2.7% of high school students are considered college-ready. But, 90% of the students The Youth Connection serves graduate from high school and either go on to college, pursue a career, or enlist to serve our country. We expose youth to new opportunities to grow, learn and serve their communities that encourage them to see beyond their neighborhoods. We encourage, engage, and support families and our results speak to our passion for helping youth connect to a brighter future.
The communities we serve typically lack resources to see beyond their border and immediate needs. The neighborhoods on the east side of Detroit where most of our youth live have high rates of crime and substance abuse, and have the highest concentration of children and poverty in the city. Making an impact and getting exposure can be more challenging if lack of opportunity, a struggling school system, transportation, funding, and everyday life choices appear to be insurmountable problems.
The Youth Connection exposes hundreds of youth to careers by offering them opportunities for paid summer internships, community service, academic support, substance abuse prevention, and nutrition education. We provide necessary resources such as clothing and food while tackling issues including homelessness and delinquency. Our trained staff also help parents by offering programs that teach parents how to effectively support and guide their children and become partners in their child's success.
TYC believes in providing tools that become part of the DNA of the families and children we serve. We open doors and provide services which will become a part of individual's identity and have these skills transfer to every aspect of that child's life. By encouraging substantial personal development we are able to provide access to opportunities while having the long-term effect of our families and children improving their own lives that allows them to lift themselves out of poverty.
