Summary

The project will strengthen dialogue, mediation, and collaboration between Kahuzi-Biega National Park (PNKB) and the riparian communities of Kabare. It will train local leaders in conflict prevention, raise awareness of biodiversity conservation, and support community economic empowerment through sustainable income-generating activities in order to reduce their dependence on the exploitation of PNKB forest resources and promote peaceful coexistence.

Challenge

Communities living around the Kahuzi-Biega National Park (KBNP) in Kabare Territory face recurrent conflicts with park authorities due to households' heavy dependence on natural resources for their livelihoods. Poverty, unemployment, the lack of income-generating activities, and insufficient dialogue between local communities and park management encourage the illegal exploitation of forest resources (firewood, charcoal, non-timber forest products, hunting, etc.) and fuel tensions.

Solution

The project will reduce conflicts between communities living around Kahuzi-Biega National Park (KBNP) by strengthening dialogue, collaboration, and the capacity of local leaders in conflict prevention. It will raise community awareness about biodiversity conservation and support sustainable income-generating activities (improved agriculture and small livestock farming) to reduce households' dependence on the illegal exploitation of forest resources, which is a major source of conflict.

Long-Term Impact

The project will have a lasting impact by reducing conflicts between communities living around the park and park authorities through continuous dialogue and strengthened local capacities in conflict management. It will improve livelihoods through sustainable income-generating activities, reducing dependence on the illegal exploitation of natural resources, which is a source of conflicts. Biodiversity awareness will promote behavioral change and ensure the long-term protection of the PNKB.
