Approximately 1 million people are blind out of 170 million populations in Bangladesh. Around 50,000 people go blind every year adding to the yearly accumulated figure in Bangladesh. Main causes of blindness are malnutrition, faulty food-habit, lack of education, inadequate eye care, lack of treatment facilities, lack of cautiousness etc. It is estimated that among 90% of blindness is avoidable and it could be cured or prevented with the certain availability of resources and by services.
The prevalence of blindness puts an additional burden on our national economy. Current blindness prevalence rate is l.53% and thus, there are approximately 675,000 blind adults in the country. Among the illiterate male manual workers blindness is much higher compared to non-manual ones.
