Compassionate Narayanganj provides holistic home-based palliative care to 150 people living with life-limiting and serious chronic illness and to their families. Your help will supply vital medicines, food parcels, pain/symptom control, compassionate care-giving, and hope for the future.
In Bangladesh, each year 602,890 people have palliative care needs & most do not have access to the essential health services, including palliative care that is so needed to improve quality of life, provide pain relief, & alleviate unnecessary suffering. In Narayanganj City Corporation, a city near Dhaka there were no palliative care services at all before the project was introduced, meaning that people with serious & life limiting conditions lived with high levels of physical pain and distress.
Compassionate Narayanganj (CN) delivers compassionate home based palliative care to 150 patients and families each day including essential medicines & food support. Care is delivered by Palliative Care Assistants with back up from doctors, nurses, & physiotherapists from the main medical university. They provide basic care, wound dressing, pain assessment, emotional & spiritual support & information on women's legal rights. CN also does community awareness & trains local health care workers.
By establishing community home-based palliative care (PC) services, we are creating a locally owned, cost-effective, & innovative care model for replication throughout Bangladesh & South Asia. The Narayanganj Palliative Care Society was formed by a group of volunteers from the community to add further support both practically & financially. The Department of Palliative Medicine at BSMMU Medical University, Dhaka provides support & engages with the government to include PC in planning for health.
