Provide Access to Healthcare in Rural Haiti

We wanted to pop in to say hello and share an update from Lahoye. Children in Lahoye, an impoverished, rural community near Haiti's border with the Dominican Republic, are the highest population at risk for HIV, malnutrition, health complications and overall lack of well being.

Project Medishare launched our Orphans and Vulnerable Children program (OVC) in 2008.

Currently, we provide 350 children ages 4-18 and their familieswith health, education and protection services, along with psychosocial and spiritual support. We work with the families to ensure the children are enrolled in school, cover all their schools fees and make sure they have materials needed. Family members contribute their school uniform, and we provide them with book bags, school books and essential items such as notebooks, pencil and a geometry kit.

The children meet bi-weekly; activities include music lessons, crafts and soccer games. Educational sessions cover topics such as health education, hygiene, economics and spiritual guidance. All the children receive visits by our staff, both at-home and in-school.

We recently visited during one of this bi-weekly meetings, where the children welcomed us with a song. 

We also had the pleasure of meeting Marjorie. This spirited 13-year-old has been part of our OEV program for the past 5 years. Marjorie impressed us with her English skills, which she studies in school. She dreams of becoming a doctor, so she can give back to her community. Marjorie shared with us that her favorite thing about the OEV program is the dancing and social activities, and all the good friends she has made there.
