Project: Clean Water Access at the Centre of Love Kibera
January to March 2024 Progress Report
Access to clean and safe water continues to be a challenge within Kibera Slums. This is due to several challenges as outlined below:
Despite of the above challenges, The Centre of Love continued with its commitment to ensure access to clean and safe water through various approaches as discussed below:
I. International Women’s Day 2024
The Centre hosted over 200 women during International Women’s Day 2024. The women were sensitized on the importance of using clean and safe water for all their needs. Clean water was supplied during the event. Also, the women were mentored to be water champions where they could go and sensitize community members on the uptake of clean water.
II. 13–20 year-old boys and girls water champions
The centre is currently mentoring young boys and girls aged between 13 to 20 years. They are been guided to be community youth water champions who will promote uptake of hygiene and sanitation practices within their homes and schools. The mentoring will culminate with hosting a soccer tournament where various talks, on water, sanitation and hygiene will be held while at the same time participating in the soccer tournament.
The centre is in the initial phase of constructing a plumbing school. Once completed, the plumbing school will be a community centre where youths will be trained in plumbing. The school will also be a community meeting centre where WASH training targeting women, youths, children, and local administration will be conducted thus promoting water, sanitation and hygiene initiatives
During the period January to March 2024, over 20,000 households accessed water. The safety of the water was enhanced by the availability of an ultrafiltration machine that filtered the water that was supplied. Also, the centre provided toilet services where over 5,000 people accessed clean toilets.
