The Centre of Love's sustainable WASH project has made a great impact! Minimizing the spread of disease throughout the pandemic 500 households and 3000 community members access water at a reduced price and our water champions promote the values of clean water, sanitation and hygiene. Our water storage tanks provide water when the Nairobi water supply is rationed. Improved water pipes, an upgrade to our purified water systems, and a closer line will assist in meeting additional water needs.
Clean water in Kibera is not only scarce, but it is also costly, inconsistent, and contaminated; since Kibera is classified as a slum, public services aren't provided on a compulsory basis. The Centre of Love water pipes are plastic and most of them run above the ground for nearly 500 meters, making them susceptible to structural exploitation. Oftentimes, the pipe crack - either from accidental foot traffic or intentional tampering from a competing distributor - and sewage readily seeps in.
The Centre of Love serves a very vulnerable population. Sustaining this project means our center will stay open and the children we serve will continue to have a safe place to learn, play and find healthy food to eat. It also gives dignity to those we serve, to allow others the same human right we all have access to daily, hygiene, bathroom, and clean water to drink and shower. This will reduce the spread of disease.
We are seeking help to build an aerial water network with a piping system. The suspended nature of the network leaves it less vulnerable to vandalism and contamination. This will ensure frequent water flow, therefore a clean environment for children, and available clean water for children and the community.
