A person who has made his/her way into Kibera will agree that it is not a usual place. With a huge population of idol young people, you get streets filled with youth at different corners and along the street junctions looking for something to do or just conversing in low tones among themselves. Basically, very suspicious of new faces but more so one bringing hope to the community. Kibera is a place for survival, one has to work to pay for anything including the very basic needs. Money is everything here, so everyone looks for things to do or make in order to get survival money.
Therefore, the construction of a community toilet was not a luxury but rather a basic necessity for the entire community more so fitted with water and hot showers. In the past few months, we got the toilets working and the showers operational. Several community members now use the facility in close proximity. The facility now serves the families plus the informal schools with the community.
With the huge number of community users, water storage has become a big need to sustain cleanness, sanitation, and hygiene standards. Therefore, we are making an appeal to you, to support us expand the water storage facility by adding another 10,000-litre water tank. On the same, expand the water Kiosk to accommodate the ultra-filtration system.
The community toilet facility is now operational supporting several households and informal schools around the Centre of Love who could initially walk for a good distance to stand in line to use a toilet. Our water champions have taken up the responsibility of providing information on sanitation and hygiene to the community plus the proper waste disposal.
With the toilet being operational, we have started seeing fewer flying toilets. The Centre of Love Garden was perpetually a disposal ground for the flying toilets. Your support has enables us to get the community toilet facility. With the extension of the water storage, there will be enough water to sustain the toilet facility and enhance proper sanitation and hygiene.
