This project aims to reduce fire risks in Bukavu through awareness-raising and community training activities. It will implement awareness campaigns, radio broadcasts, and information sessions to improve households' knowledge of fire causes and prevention measures. It will also strengthen the capacities of community leaders, volunteers, and households to promote fire safety and reduce human and material losses.
The city of Bukavu faces recurrent fires caused by faulty electrical installations, the use of candles, kerosene lamps, or charcoal in enclosed spaces, and improper use of gas. Dense housing, buildings made of flammable materials, and the lack of urban planning worsen the situation. Low levels of awareness and weak emergency response services increase vulnerability. The main need is to strengthen community awareness and capacities to reduce fire risks.
The project provides a sustainable response to recurrent fires in Bukavu by strengthening prevention and community awareness. It distributes fire safety tools (extinguishers, fire blankets, etc.), conducts awareness campaigns, radio programs, and information sessions, and improves households' knowledge of fire causes and prevention. It also strengthens capacities of community leaders, volunteers, and households to promote safe behavior and rapid response.
The project will have a lasting impact by establishing a culture of fire prevention and safety in Bukavu. It will strengthen the knowledge and capacities of households, leaders, and volunteers, promoting safer behaviors. Awareness and early warning mechanisms will enable better anticipation and faster response to fires, reducing human and material losses and strengthening long-term community resilience.
