Episode 1: "9.7 billion euros: the cost of denial"
9.7 billion euros is what sexual violence against children costs each year in France. According to the CIIVISE (French Independent Commission on Incest and Sexual Violence against Children), it affects 10% of French men and women.
Denying this reality is allowing impunity. The figure is high and surprises us, but because it makes us aware of the scale and seriousness of sexual violence against children. In fact, only 3% of the victims of rape and assault see their attacker to be sentenced.
Then, €9.7 billion, what does that mean? At first, it means that there is an immediate cost of taking care of the victims: hospitalization costs, reception in the police stations, and the costs of criminal justice. But it also means that there is a cost of long-term consequences, in particular on the victims’ health. For example, the treatment of risky behavior disorders, the loss productivity, but also the cost of lives lost.
Beyond awareness of this figure, it must invite us to think about a more effective and appropriate care for child victims of violence. Every year, 160 000 children are victims of sexual violence in France. We must believe them. We must protect them.
