Dear Donors,
Casa Italia continues to be a safe and loving home for children living in situations of extreme vulnerability in Ghana. The project’s main goal is to fight the social exclusion of children with disabilities and to improve the living conditions of children facing severe hardship, ensuring their fundamental rights and offering them a family environment where they can grow with dignity and care.
Today, Casa Italia welcomes 19 children with disabilities, providing them with medical care, food, education and emotional support. Many of these children arrive after emergency interventions by the Ghanaian Social Welfare services, often because of abuse, neglect, abandonment or extreme poverty. The center is much more than a residential facility: it is a true family community.
Every day, 18 local staff members work inside the project, including caregivers, cooks, administrative staff and maintenance workers. Alongside them, volunteers are often present, coming from Italy and other countries such as Switzerland and Germany, to contribute with specialized skills in physiotherapy, speech therapy and education, while others help with maintenance and renovation activities. Casa Italia is made up of eight buildings designed to respond to the children’s different needs: dedicated rooms for mothers with newborns, living spaces for older children, a kitchen, a physiotherapy and rehabilitation area, administrative offices and accommodation for the local coordinator.
The stories of the children hosted at Casa Italia are often marked by abandonment, violence or severe neglect. Several children live with physical disabilities caused by birth conditions or past abuse, while others carry deep emotional trauma that requires long-term psychological support. Some are now slowly reconnecting with relatives or extended family members, while others have no known family network at all.
Despite these difficult beginnings, the progress achieved is extraordinary. Children with disabilities are learning to become increasingly independent in their daily activities. Others who arrived deeply traumatized are gradually rebuilding trust and emotional stability through therapy, education and the constant presence of caring adults. In some cases, family reintegration pathways are also being explored when safe and appropriate conditions exist.
Education remains one of the central pillars of the project. Beyond attending school, children are encouraged to develop autonomy, social skills and self-confidence. Daily routines, shared meals, games, study time and moments of affection help recreate the sense of normality and protection that every child deserves.
Your support makes all of this possible. Thank you for standing beside Casa Italia and for helping us ensure that every child can grow with dignity, love and hope.
