The Closing the Digital Divide Project at Curtin Child Learning Centre (CLICCS) Uganda was implemented to improve access to digital education for children from underserved communities. The project recognizes that access to computers, the internet, and digital skills is essential for success in today's world. However, many learners in rural Uganda have limited opportunities to use digital technology due to inadequate infrastructure, lack of equipment, and unreliable electricity.
During the reporting period, the project focused on increasing learners' access to digital learning resources and strengthening their computer literacy. Computers and other ICT equipment were made available for educational purposes, enabling pupils to gain practical experience in basic computer operations such as typing, using educational software, creating documents, and safely accessing online learning materials. Teachers also received support to integrate digital tools into classroom teaching, making lessons more engaging and interactive.
The project benefited approximately 300 learners and 15 members of staff. Regular digital literacy sessions were introduced, allowing learners to develop confidence in using technology. Teachers reported improved learner participation, greater enthusiasm during lessons, and increased interest in science, mathematics, and technology-related subjects. Learners who had never used a computer before successfully acquired basic digital skills that will support their future education and employment opportunities.
Despite these achievements, several challenges were encountered. Limited numbers of computers meant that learners had to share devices during practical sessions. Unstable electricity supply occasionally disrupted lessons, while internet connectivity remained expensive and unreliable. Continuous maintenance of ICT equipment also required additional financial resources. These challenges highlighted the ongoing need for investment in digital infrastructure and sustainable technology solutions.
The project has already created a positive impact within the school and the surrounding community. Learners are becoming more digitally confident, teachers are increasingly using technology to support instruction, and parents appreciate the importance of digital education in preparing their children for the future. The initiative has also encouraged a culture of innovation, creativity, and problem-solving among pupils.
Going forward, CLICCS Uganda plans to expand the digital learning programme by increasing the number of computers, improving internet connectivity, installing reliable solar power to support ICT equipment, and providing continuous training for both teachers and learners. Partnerships with donors, corporate organizations, and technology companies will be essential in achieving these goals and ensuring that every child has equal access to quality digital education.
