This July is on track to be one of the hottest on record. In the communities where we work, heat is not an abstraction. It dries up grazing land, pushes people to move, and sharpens disputes that were already there. We spend our days alongside the local leaders and practitioners who navigate this reality as they find ways to build social bonds to solve challenges. And we help get the lessons we learn together into the rooms where decisions get made. Thank you for fueling this critical work!
Snapshots from recent work: Peru: Floods and landslides are among disasters made more severe by climate change. Along with shifts in land use, such as illegal logging and mining, Indigenous communities face challenges to culture and resource management practices. Kenya-Ethiopia border: Historic drought, chronic water scarcity, and instability across the Horn of Africa have displaced millions of people. Scarce resources and food insecurity heighten the risk of conflict in this region.
In Peru, Kenya, Ethiopia and everywhere we go, we see how knowledge and experiences of communities facing these issues are crucial for developing effective solutions. By learning alongside them, we can identify patterns that emerge across different contexts and give clues to what matters most. In collaboration with community partners and policy leaders, we are integrating the insights into practical tools designed for their use, as well as applied wherever climate change and conflict intersect.
Too often communities are seen as the source of data, not the source of solutions for investment or theories for policy attention. Our approach flips that dynamic by listening first. Community partners are integral to analysis and co-owners of all research products. Resulting tools and resources are then fully available to local communities, as well as brought to peace and development workers, donors, and policymakers in the position to impact resources to address these linked challenges.
