GCS has been carrying out this project since 2015 to support self-reliance of the vulnerable people in Nyarubaka Sector. However, climate change creates enormous challenges for those people's everyday lives heavily dependent on small-scale agriculture. To overcome these challenges, GCS will start 'climate-smart agriculture' skills training program for farmers in Nyarubaka. This program will equip the farmers with adaptive capacity to climate change and pave the way to realize self-reliance.
GCS has provided farmers with agriculture skills training through demonstration farms in Nyarubaka Sector to improve productivity. However, climate change has threatened farmer livelihoods for many years, and the threat is getting severe. Unusual heavy rains cause soil erosion and harm agricultural products, and the agricultural calendar is not the same as before. It results in reduced agricultural productivity and unstable income for the farmers.
Therefore, GCS will introduce a new training program for climate-smart agriculture in addition to current agriculture skills training which has been operating effectively and efficiently for six years. The new program will cover several subjects from agroforestry for prevention of soil erosion to the information literacy which can enable farmers to access and utilize weather information.
The climate-friendly farming practices for the farmers, 95% of residents in Nyarubaka Sector, can lower the impact of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our long-term goals are raising climate resilience by 70% and improving agriculture productions by 30%. This means that farmers can adapt to climate change and increase their income to get out of poverty. Your donation will be the hope for the farmers in Nyarubaka facing climate change on the front line.
